While attempting to purchase the team in 1998, Smiley led the effort to trade away key players from the 1997 World Series Championship Team to help reduce the price tag and financial obligation.

Despite gutting the team, Smiley was never able to complete the purchase and ultimately the team was sold to John Henry.
